Daily Discussion 1/18/2020: Underrated Cards - The Hidden Gems of Clash Royale

    Topic: Underutilized Cards

Since the very beginning there have always been extensive disputes regarding the "top dogs" and very controversial cards. Whether it is deck construction, balance changes, or strategy, there are several cards, like Valkyrie and Hog Rider, that always seem to be acknowledged. However, all of this discussion regarding these cards has greatly diverted from the more obscure cards that never seem to get much love, if any. Though many of the lesser popular cards are considered to be pitiful, outclassed, and volatile, there are also quite a few cards that are just wholly undervalued and deserving of more attention. Here are some cards that I find to fit into this category:

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Bomb Tower: Though indisputably the top building in the meta it was frequently considered to be the worst building of all time before its sudden, unexpected spike in usage in October. However, I believe this is the prime demonstration of how a card can jump from zero-to-hero exclusively from another card. It was Elixir Golem that proved Bomb Tower's potential, so I believe that Bomb Tower would remain obscure otherwise despite it remaining fantastic post-EG meta. Nonetheless, it has always been an overlooked card that's finally seeing usage, let alone any serious play.

Bomber: Bomber is yet another card that was in an unfortunate state since Clash Royale's debut. However, throughout 2019 it certainly had some striking limelights in the meta. Royal attaining #1 is a big one to note, which proved Bomber's potential to legitimate usage in the meta. Its inability to target air units is greatly compensated by its massive AOE and high damage output, making it quite a formidable unit against any ground unit. These traits have allowed Bomber to establish a legitimate niche in Golem Beatdown decks along with sporadic usage in the top 200.

Cannon Cart: This is likely THE most slept on card currently. Unlike the many other obscure cards, Cannon Cart isn't overlooked from having fundamental flaws. The one issue it has, which is its inability to target air units, is completely made up for by its long range and quick movement speed. These are characteristics that deviate Cannon Cart from its competition by allowing it to serve a formidable, immediate pressure unit. In addition, its decent DPS and high HP also allow it to act as a solid counterpush unit with the correct support. It also wields the spell resilience many other cards lack on defense with its shield, and with its building forme it may also be able to distract building targeters.

Fisherman: Though much of the nerf it previously had was greatly compensated Fisherman still seems to be an overlooked unit. Despite its longer hook charge time amplifying his main weakness -re-targeting and countering swarm units- it doesn't stray too far from what Fisherman remains to thrive at: providing tons of utility by pulling units across the arena. Whether it is defense or offense, a well-timed and placed Fisherman could single-handedly turn the tide of the game. It's quite baffling why he isn't utilized more frequently, and his ≈60% win rate this past week certainly backs this up.

Hunter: Typically favored over other more consistent ranged units, Hunter provides a lot of utility in a vacuum. Its bullet spread not only makes it a fantastic tank buster, but also makes him a decent counter against swarm units in a pinch. It notably does incredibly well against both WBs and Miner, which is an omnipresent combo in the current meta. Though can be underwhelming on offense Hunter can certainly have its moments, especially when the opposition attempts to distract him up close. Hunter's jack-of-all-trades nature allows Hunter to always establish a role against any other archetype if one can play around his eminent flaw: his short range and lackluster DPS from a distance.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Discussion Questions:

    • Which card do you consider to be overlooked and should be played more
      • Why do you think this card is an outlier in the meta?
      • What is/are the defining characteristic/s that should make it a compelling choice over its otherwise desired competition?
      • What impact could it make on the meta if it is just utilized more?
      • What decks could you perceive this card being a capable substitute for
        • Have you/others have had personal experience with this deck? Were your pursuits successful?

For the love of god, FIX THE WAR MATCHUPS!!! (FIX: Add legendary sub-leagues.) We are a 3300 clan who constantly get matched up out of our league. This war we’re against two 30k clans, a 20k clan, and a 15k clan. This happens almost every war. FIT IT PLEASE!!!!!

Dont know how to win a match in overtime as none of your troops can get over the bridge at all due to endless skeletons and spear goblins?not to worry, here’s the perfect solution! Put not one, not two but three! magic archers at the brigde and let them do the work. Sit back and relax to win :)

Miner needs a nerf: A response

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:37 AM PST

Miner has been standing at a rather high use/win rate recently.

A low risk/medium reward card, it has few positive trade counters and many ways to be used, including chipping towers, sniping units, tanking for pushes etc.

With a low cost and high versatility, Miner finds itself appearing in nearly every meta deck, it's no doubt that it is one of, if not the strongest card in the game.

Thus, it begs a few questions:

    Is Miner overpowered?

    No.

Of all win conditions, Miner deals the least amount of potential damage alone, surpassed even by the likes of Wall Breakers.

With laughable dps, it needs an entire match's worth of time just to take one tower.

In fact, you could say that literally every other win condition is more effective at being a win condition than Miner.

Why is it used so much then?

In a meta where every push gets stopped by Bomb Tower, Tornado and/or Pekka, it's very hard for you to make a push that reaches the tower, so many would choose the safest way out and use Miner.

Despite being the lowest reward win condition, Miner's low risk factor made him one of the only reliable win condition in this meta.

It's high versatility allows it to fit in many different archetypes with a support role.

In fact, some win conditions need Miner to be viable, eg Balloon, Wall Breakers and Mortar. By themselves, it is difficult to win against even semi-decent players.

In a nutshell, being the safest option and with over half of the win conditions in need of Miner's help, it's no wonder that it's highly used.

When everything gets killed on their way to the tower, the only way is underneath.

When no amount of support troops would stop the SplashNado from killing your push, use Miner.

When no amount of precise placement would stop the the Bomb Tower from pulling your troops, use Miner.

There's a reason why Golem, one of the few cards that do not synergise with Miner, has a low use/win rate.

    What if we nerf Miner?

Not much would change, no amount of nerfs would stop Miner from being the only card that can spawn right next to its targets.

Decks that rely on Miner, basically 70% of decks, would hurt, but they'd still have to use it to find consistent success.

    What if we kill Miner?

    Everyone suffers.

    Many win conditions become unplayable.

Bridgespam and Graveyard become the op decks, with the occasional Xbow. Golem still sucks.

The meta becomes more insufferable, with people asking for more nerfs to more cards.

    What should we do then?

If Miner doesn't deserve a nerf, and defensive cards are apparently the one causing all the trouble, it is them that needs a nerf.

    Right?

    No, again

This might seem contradictory, but I believe it to be true. Any nerfs would only treat the symptoms, not the cause, the cause being the lack of deck variety.

I believe that a better change is to buff a select few cards, cards that would make the meta more diverse. A topic to be discussed sometime in the future...

    Thanks for reading.
