Discussion: The Lost Lore of Clash Royale

Storytime: The Phantom Monarch and His Lost Legacy

Let's take a moment to see the cast of Clash Royale in a new light...

The old cellar door nearly bucked the weatherworn hinges when it burst open and a mystical glow that gilded the stairwell ahead. The commotion echoed in every direction, causing some of the bats to chatter loudly as if greeting an old friend… a very old friend.

The Royal Ghost drifted silently through the doorway and down the stairs in stony solitude, his ethereal glow his only armour against the darkness devouring his surroundings.

The bottom of the staircase arrived at the abandoned entryway into the darkest dungeon of the castle. The Royal Ghost let out an almighty sigh.

"Home sweet home…", he mumbled, seemingly disappointed to find himself exactly where he planned to be.

Sensing the king's return, fire spirits scurried through the cracks in the walls and made themselves comfortable in dozens of lamps lining the hallways in every direction.

Of course, there was no need for such earthly formalities as opening doors, descending staircases and lighting passages to avoid hazards when he could just as easily float through every obstacle he meets. Our spectral monarch was used to the old ways and something very-much alive still burned brightly inside him to keep him firmly rooted to the mortal coil.

For decades our king ruled over a peaceful land of magic, prosperity and wonder. For decades he brought clans together and brokered a lasting peace between humans and goblins. He was benevolent and he was much loved and respected.

Traversing the castle halls at night, the king often reminisced over his many years on the throne and recalled the companions he made along the way.

His nightly wanderings often took him to new corners of the castle he'd long forgotten. Tonight, his mindless jaunt took him to a dilapidated old library, several storeys below the Wizard's tower on the North face of the castle. Thanks to a rather useless wizard's magic, the doorway was completely hidden unless you weren't looking for it.

As a young prince, he would often come here to hide from his nanny. It could be hours before he'd finally emerge having gotten lost in some gripping tales of his forefathers overcoming tremendous odds and unsurmountable evils. Handwoven tapestries hung on the wall, depicting chaotic battles with dragons, witches and golems facing off against the palace's own Royal Recruits, Hogs and Giants.

Today, the room that smelled like knowledge and adventure now reeked of mould and systemic rot. Or so he imagined, seeing as it had been centuries since he last experienced a sense of smell.

Tthe King scanned the shelves with a furrowed brow, he cussed the crumbling brick and mouldy books and mourned his memory of the nostalgic library in all its regality.

His gaze finally rested on a faint shimmer in the corner of the room. On the cover, the faint glow from the room's fire spirits was enough to discern his own face looking back at him, no doubt sketched in the twilight years of his reign.

Still undeterred by his solitude after so many years departed, he read the gilded title aloud:

"'Great King Albion Regelus III - The People's Grand Champion'. Hrmmm... I haven't heard that name in some time."

He dusted off the crumbled tome and blew the cobwebs off the leather binding as best he could.

Then, he stopped. He stopped and locked eyes with himself on the cover for a moment, or maybe three. Was that the beginnings of a smile he could feel?

    "Pah!", he scoffed, "Never!"

It was the Royal Ghost's belief that he still roamed the castle because he had some sort of unfinished business to attend to before moving on. His was certain that the fear of being forgotten was anchoring him to his former home for so long. His purpose had become ensuring his legacy would never be forgotten and his story would be passed down through the ages. For many a night, he had searched high and low throughout the castle for evidence that his presence was still felt and his example led future generations to even greater actions. He sought proof that he would be remembered as a celebrated monarch and would never be reduced to a footnote in history.

This tome could be the key that could have unlocked his spirit from its phantom form, allowing him to move on.

But when he opened the tome, a spine-tingling groan escaped the King. The pages were blank. Whatever ink told his story on these very pages had faded or washed away.

Tossing the book away in a heightened rage, he grabbed 'A History of Dragons' but those pages too were blank. The ink had faded beyond repair. Each book he checked - 'A Robot's Guide to Pancakes', 'Archery for Princesses', 'Everybody Logs', 'Where Do Lava Pups Come From?' and 'Lyrical Translations for Goblin Karaoke' - had all suffered the same fate.

Several minutes passed. The books in this library would never tell another tale again. Now both the books and our solemn King were lost for words. For it was no use, this room was another dead end and he was no closer to finding a mark left by his legacy, and still nothing suggested the story of his successful reign would ever see the light of day.

    Unless…

    Discussion

Today I want to kick off a discussion about something I think is sorely missing from Clash Royale - lore.

That nonsense you just read above was my silly attempt at creating a small nugget of lore for our favourite floaty monarch, the Royal Ghost.

For those of you who play other games like World of Warcraft, League of Legends, Mass Effect, The Witcher or even BrawlStars, you'll know it's hard not to be swept up in the lore, the hype and how effective it can be in building out a fictional universe.

In Clash Royale, we have a huge number of loosely connected characters who our only connection to as players is hovering them over a tile and expecting them to get to work defending or pushing a lane.

Clasharama was a sure sign that lore was on the minds of CR & CoC teams too, but when both teams are putting everything into making their games better they can be forgiven for skimping on opportunities to develop lore. I for one loved Clasharama, but the lore ideas engine seems to start and end with the show.

For a game that many of us have spent a crazy number of hours playing, I think the Clash universe (and players) deserve more lore painting a richer game world for us all to do battle in. So...

Fill the books in the Royal Ghost's library with lore

Comment below with your ideas for Clash lore. It could be how you imagine two characters interacting together. It could be an idea about who would be friends and who would be enemies.

If you're into the idea, it could even be a paragraph or two of your own lore. The more the merrier.

Maybe the Lumberjack sets out on a redemption arc by planting trees to seek forgiveness from the Log and the following spring a little tree sprouting rage potions pops up in the royal garden and nobody dares asks the hard questions…

Or it could be how the baby dragon lost a fight to the golem and channeling his inner Rocky Balboa, he trained to get stronger, got a neat helmet for focussing his flames and in the end the Inferno Dragon saved the day.

What if the princess is chased from her homeland and raises three baby dragons before joining a knight to take back her country, only to go a bit crazy at the end and torches the city she's returned to rule so the knight has to kill her to prevent her getting any more deranged.... actually never mind, forget that one. That's a terrible story. Nobody wants to see that and it should never ever have be made HBO.

What kind of lore would you like to see from Supercell to help build out the world of Clash Royale?

Maybe five years in, you think it's too late for Clash Royale to adopt it now, but there's some exciting Supercell games just around the corner. What would you like to see lore wise for the Clash universe as a whole?

You can also give your two cents on how you feel about more or less lore in Clash Royale in the poll below.

    Stay Clashy!

Where was the spawner nerf ?

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 09:52 AM PDT

For the love of God something needs to be done about spawners. It's ridiculous that they basically were not touched during the balance update. They are all over ladder STILL. It's literally Sim city builder while you do nothing but waste elixir to stop the fire spirit nukes from destroying your tower , and by time your unit gets to the opposite lane they are already dead from spear hut minions or the fire spirits. Shit is not fun to go against AT ALL and it honestly toxic to the game. Furnace carries that deck due to the sheer damage they do. Either nerf the spawner time or the waves it spawns or the damage. Tired of seeing this on ladder

Why do people use this card? Genuinely curious. Trying to main a new deck that has this in it, but I feel like things like I-dragon would be better. I feel like it’s super squishy and slow for 3 elixir

Ladder below 6000 is way harder than ladder above 6000. My thoughts.

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 08:40 AM PDT

I'm the kind of player that managed to climb around 6300 trophies by the end of each season. In fact most of the times I end up below 6300 trophies, it's very difficult to me to reach that amount of trophies. So you can say I'm just an average Clash Royale player.

The thing is... I feel like it's much harder to win games when you fall into 5600-5800 trophies. And it's not because players are better (obviously they are not), but the games are way more chaotic and unpredictable. You can face decks with 2-3 support troops (wizard, witch and electro wizard for example), decks with 2-3 win conditions, decks that are somewhat crazy from the point of view of a "metagame" player but pretty effective against these very metagame decks. Once I fall into that trophy bracket, it feels like falling into the hell. You can expect almost anything, any crazy deck, any stupid combinations. But these combinations just counters your deck, completely destroys you, and you just think "man, I have been destroyed by this stupid deck and I had no chance of ever coming back!".

The true challenge is in that bracket, because you can face anything. That unpredictability is what makes that bracket a nightmare.

Clarification - An X% boost in damage is not more valuable simply because a card has multiple units.

    Posted: 08 Sep 2021 07:32 AM PDT

I have seen multiple youtubers make this mistake talking about the hogs. "The hogs got a 6% buff, and remember that's across 4 units!"

Thats not how percent buffs work.

    Random Example w/ random numbers:

    Royal Frogs - 5 units

    Deals 100 dps each

    Group dps 100x5 500 dps

    Dog Rider - 1 Unit

    Deals 500 dps

If they both got a 5% buff, they would both be dealing the same dps. Frogs would deal 105 x 5=525. And the Dog Rider would have the exact same dps too.

The only way swarm units benefit specifically from a buff, is a flat damage or dps increase. If Supercell had a game mode where every unit gained 20 flat dps then swarm units would benefit the most. In our scenario Royal Frogs group dps would jump to 600 while Dog Rider would stay at 520.
