[Effort] Replay feature and how to use it.

    Posted: 16 Dec 2020 04:49 PM PST

Hello everyone! It's HR here and I am going to be going over the match replay feature in your activity log. Looking at your replays and being able to recognize mistakes and correct them are a very basic yet essential part in advancing your skill as a player. Although the replay feature in Clash doesn't have certain mechanics that may assist your analysis, it still is a big help when used correctly.

Part 1: What do I look for and how do I find them? Recognizing mistakes.

Humans are born with error. You will never play an exactly perfect Clash Royale match, win or loose. Often, you will make one of two mistakes: Macro mistake and Micro mistake. Let's first go over what both of them look like.

MACRO: When you play a Clash Royale match, you will always have a different match every time. Even if you face the same exact deck twice in a row, there is no way that the starting hand, full cycle, and even exact tile placements will be the same. Mistakes involving multiple pieces of a match at an exact point which would be hard to replicate are macro mistakes because they most likely will be based off of the comparison between your macro game and your opponent's.

For example, let's say your playing 2.6 and the opponent is playing 2.9 RG. You just defended a Royal Giant and decide to play a Hog Rider the second you hit 4 elixir. They then play a fisherman and activate their king tower, while cycling back to Royal Giant, and eventually, they take your tower. You just made a macro mistake because you didn't know the elixir comparison between theirs and yours, and because of it you thought that after they played Royal Giant you would be able to punish the play. You were wrong, and they drained you of your elixir. The ignorance of their elixir count and card cycle made you think a hog was safe, and therefore you made an incorrect play due to not having macro knowledge.

MICRO: Conversely, there are placements, timings, and strategies all players who play a card know and will almost always use. It's just placements that are so natural, they don't even think about it much. When you make a mistake with these placements and timings, you end up with a micro mistake.

Looking at the same example, but now your playing the 2.9 deck. Let's say you just played RG, and the opponent punishes you with a Hog Rider. You have fisherman in hand. However, you played your fisherman a tile too far from the Hog. He walks away from it, and the Hog deals 1500 damage while your fisherman goes into la la land to get countered. This time around, you just made a micro mistake. You could have activated the king tower for a positive elixir trade easily but you messed up a small placement. Because of this, the micro interaction didn't happen properly in your favor. It didn't matter what elixir you were at after playing the fisherman or what cards the opponent had in hand. All that mattered for making this mistake was that your placement was off, making this a micro mistake.

Ok, so now you know what kinds of mistakes to look for and how to spot them, roughly. Now let's go over more specifically how to spot them out and see what you should have done.

Part 2: Spotting mistakes in a replay.

The first thing that you want to do is get a replay you can use. I recommend either using one from a Grand/Classic Challenge game or Private tournament game. Win or loss doesn't matter much, and in fact you should do both if you have a mass match analysis from a ladder push or Global Tournament/GC. Only looking at losses demonstrate what you should not have done, but doesn't always show how you should have done it.

Once you have your replay, hit play and already pause it, and set the speed to 1/2x. If you didn't catch a mistake of either type in the match, you wouldn't catch it now going at the same speed.

Carefully look out for micro mistakes that were obvious throughout the opening plays, and in general note all the cards that were played and where.

Eventually, after the first set of cards are played, interactions have happened, and maybe 45 seconds to a minute has passed since the beginning of the match. Chances are, there isn't a lot going on apart from the last spells ending their duration and a few troops are being picked off by your towers. Now is a perfect time to pause the replay for a second to scope out macro mistakes.

Look at the current macro game in the paused match and ask yourself these questions:

    • What is your current elixir count?

    • What is your opponent's elixir count Who's higher?

    • What is your hand?

    • Opponent's hand?

    • Any big difference in damage yet?

    • Should you have gone on offense when you actually played on defense? Vice versa?

After you have broken down the first plays, click play again and repeat the first process of noticing micro plays, as you hit double elixir, where most likely you will have time to stop and ask yourself these questions, very similar to the opening plays:

    • Is there a big difference in elixir? Was the elixir advantage lost or gained by anyone? How about card count? Are you properly able to defend cheap attacks now with your current hand, if you need to?

    • Is there a significant damage lead on either end of the board?

    • Do you have your card cycle figured out? Have you developed a strategic rhythm that will allow you to gain a large damage advantage?

Repeat this process throughout the match. Always pay attention to how you did your micro, and how your macro is because of it. Under many match ups, you can get a repeated process going and your macro game will be much easier for all of your matches.

Part 3: Other things you can do with your replays/general last minute tips:

    • Replays are a good place for simulating a match without playing a match. In fact, that's why it's there. You can use this accordingly and practice reading your opponent's macro. Cover up the opponent's elixir count and hand. Treat the replay as a normal game, counting the opponent's card cycle and elixir. When a few plays have passed, see if you can correctly recite parts of their hand and about how much elixir they have. If you can great! Continue doing this in the same replay for more practice. If you didn't, make note of what it is now, and try again in a few more plays.

    • Use both wins and losses. I know I mentioned this earlier but it really helps you see how you play and what you do well and what you don't, etc.

    • Don't play 10 matches in a row and expect yourself to do this with every single one. 3 at most is good enough. You can start a GC/CC, play some matches for about 20 minutes or so, then using the method above you watch at half the speed, so it would take you 40 minutes to do. So now you have already spent an hour just playing 3-4 matches and analyzing them. You don't need a massive win streak to spend some time with this game...

    Conclusion

Match replay analysis is an important part of improving in the game. If you are learning new decks, having trouble hitting a new PB, or just want to win in general, properly noticing your past games and mistakes are crucial. And remember, you don't need to play much in order to get a heck of a lot of time burnt from this game.

    Thanks for reading!

X-Bow's Ladder Performance Since Balance Changes Last December 09

Supercell has recently released balancing changes to the game which we can see the changelog here, among the most affected, if not the MOST affected of the changes is the X-Bow . As I have been pulling a small subset of data since the start of Season 18, I decided to look on how X-Bow performs post balance changes.

After filtering those matches that happened between December 09 07H GMT to December 16 00H GMT, the dataset that I have has 608k unique ladder matches across all arenas and consists of 592k unique players, out of these unique ladder matches, it has 29K matches where either player has used X-Bow.

We can see the breakdown of the matches per with and without X-Bow usage.

X-Bow Matches Per Day Since Balance Change

Here's the breakdown of ladder matches with and without X-Bow broken down per Arena. I didn't include all the arenas, as arenas 1-5, and also Royale and Ultimate Champion doesn't contain much data in my *dataset

    https://preview.redd.it/wdawv03zxi561.png?width=1846&format=png&auto=webp&s=1ff1d89a309967b17fc40455000863ee6a0e0e51

The next 2 graphs shows the Win-Loss counts and % of matches with X-Bow, I removed matches where BOTH players were using X-Bow.

Win-Loss counts of X-Bow Across Arenas

Here's a graph showing the win % of X-Bow decks across the arenas

    https://preview.redd.it/5536e01a3j561.png?width=1848&format=png&auto=webp&s=334ede9e19e7554af0dbd549a7c229e75dcfc088

I then created a network graph of the usual troop and building cards of WINNING X-BOW decks across all arenas. You can see the relative weight of these cards for X-Bow decks. Without almost any effort, you can see Skeletons, Ice Spirit, Ice Wizard, Archers, Knight, Tesla, Ice Golem.

Troop and Building Cards Utilization with XBow

I then created network graph of the usual troops and building spells that XBOW decks LOSES against.

Usual Troop + Building Cards that XBOW loses against

The nodes may not be too obvious to discern , so here's the top 5 in descending order

    • Valkyrie
    • Knight
    • Baby Dragon
    • Wizard
    • Hog Rider

    Take away

    • XBow is still viable, but based on the small data that we have and around 29K matches, Xbow based decks have an average win rate of 48% from Arena 10 to the upper brackets. This could be compensated with more focus on play and trying to win at all times.

Take note on the data that I'm using

    • I have a Microsoft Azure pipeline that pulls ladder data of members of 470 clans that I've selected, in comparison, this is a very, very, very small fraction of what is stated in this Reddit post about player and clan stats.
    • The 470 clans consists of...
      • Mix of top 10 clans global, international, random countries of seasons 17 and 18
      • Clans that my clan went up against in clan wars.
      • Clans of players I and my clanmates went up against regardless of game mode
    • Sometimes my pipeline encounters unforeseen errors and thus there are gaps in the data, but i resume the pipeline as soon as I discover it has stopped.

When will this visual issue be fixed? It nearly cost us a win yesterday. I was hoping it would have been fixed in the last CW improvements. It’s very confusing for people.

Supercell, can we have a number showing our wins for 2v2 battles? If you are considering a ladder system for 2v2, we should at least get our win number in our profile.
