Idea: with Seth leaving, fill his spot for video announcements with a content creator like Ash

Drew's a great guy and all, but a little on the dry side. Granted, not sure if Seth's replacement will fill that void, but the delivery of news and content could stand an improvement. Who better than one of the four content creators they already partnered with?

[Discussion] Have Arenas lost their meaning?

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 06:22 AM PDT

    Introduction

Hey there, fellow critical commenters of Reddit, CharityFair here, and today I decided that we're going to talk about a topic that isn't really discussed on this subreddit, only under the blanket term of Ladder.

Hope you're ready for a small trip down memory lane... and maybe bring some popcorn with ya.

Arenas: The Original Battlegrounds for Clash Royale

In this day and age, people hate Ladder very much, not only due to its contrived algorithm, but also because it's nothing more than a business model for the game. But we can't deny it's the original gamemode for Clash Royale.

Back in the day, Arenas used to be so much more meaningful in terms of core gameplay. Each new Arena meant a new stage in your journey, since you were able to unlock new cards, and you were presented with a new Arena aesthetic in your future battles.

With each new Arena, you advanced more and more. You had something to look forward to (New Cards to unlock and new Arena aesthetic), and you felt like you were actually advancing.

Leagues: The Prestigious Places of Yesteryear

Back in the day, Leagues used to be much more prestigious, and you had much harder opponents than you do today.

Leagues used to be the place for the elite of the elite players to compete against one another in glorious 1v1 Battles, brute against brute, in the chance of getting the oh-so coveted Draft Chest.

Players would fight fiercely to keep their position, and the elites worked long and hard in order to advance through the next Leagues, with each League having more prestige than the last.

It used to be a Colosseum for the veterans of this game to shed blood upon. And what came of it?

    Actually, here's a better question...

What came of Ladder as a whole?

Arenas: The Abandoned Battlegrounds of Clash Royale

In this day and age, Arenas are no longer places where you feel like you actually progress through. Places where you'd make memories. Places where the players were raging very hard whenever they saw overleveled Royal Giants or Elite Barbarians. That title now belongs to the Leagues.

Arenas are now just relics of a long lost time, remnants of a glorious age, from when the game was still very popular, and every update had so much content to explore.

Now, it's inhabited by bots, taking the place of the once beaming playerbase.

Leagues: A Place for Giants to Squash You

Leagues now take the place of Arenas. Once a place where veterans were going at it, fighting for which advances and which doesn't, now it's a battleground for the everyman.

Of course, veterans are still fighting for their position in the Leagues, but that's because they have long since reached that threshold. People have stopped caring about Ladder. Veterans became casuals. The Leagues are now just another arena, where even the most unexperienced player can compete. It's the new place for your Average Joe to fight in.

The point I'm trying to prove is that there's barely any magic to playing Ladder anymore. Sure, it has always been this contrived gamemode where the algorithm would pin you against powerful opponents in order to control your win rates, but at least it meant much more than just a business model.

Nowadays the Ladder experience has been improved using features such as Trophy Road in order to progress faster. But still, Ladder, and especially Arenas barely have any substance to it anymore.

    Arenas: What went wrong?

As I said, Arenas used to have much more substance in the earlier days of the game. Now it's a shadow of itself.

What caused this change? Well, let's just say that this can be attributed to a few changes made within the game itself:

    • The Trophy Inflation

Part of the Trophy Road update. Its main goal is to make the playerbase's places in Ladder be more diverse, trophy-wise. Additionally, you no longer get reset to the beginning of the League branches, and now the decrease in trophies at the end of each season has been halved.

It was supposed to unplug the treadmill, and let the Players in the bottom Leagues finally advance, but instead set up the Master branch to be the new treadmill. Leagues which used to be more prestigious in the past now barely hold any leverage, and as a result, it extended the mediocrity of the Arenas all the way to Master I, possibly even further.

    • The Decrease in Active Players

This one is more of a natural occurrence, since any game in its prime usually skyrockets in popularity, only to witness a slow decline in playerbase numbers.

But in Clash Royale's case, it's even more egregious than that. Since there are less players, the Arenas became quieter, and the developers needed to make it so that there's more opponents if they don't want the player to wait three minutes for a single matchmaking. So they added bots who would replace those inactive accounts, with their predictable moves and basic names, allowing basically EVERYONE who's even interested in progressing in Ladder to reach the Leagues.

    • The Decrease in Ladder Interest

Ever since they introduced more and more content, people had more options, and weren't forced to play Ladder in order to progress. They found it to be a pretty unfun gamemode to play, so they abandoned it.

They became what we now know as Casuals, people who still enjoy the game, but don't indulge themselves in competitive modes.

    Final Thoughts

It really says something about the game's longevity when the MAIN GAMEMODE of Clash Royale, where it all began, is now just another side gamemode.

The gamemode, symbolically, has been replaced by the Party Mode, and now you'll have to play CWII if you want any chance at a faster progression.

Now, I know many of you are gonna be asking:

"Why the heck do you care so much about Ladder? It's a fixed gamemode, and now we have more ways to play the game!"

Well, yes, we do. Those gamemodes are, in fact, more fun than the original PvP gamemode itself.

But don't forget the fact that this is where you used to spend most of your time in. This is where you got your first Legendary, and the Legendary after that. This is where you unlocked the cards that you use right now.

This is the place where you started your journey, as just another beginner. There was no 2v2, no Party Modes, not even Clan Battle Chests.

It all began when you pressed "Battle" for the first time.

Where is the Future of Clash Royale? My Prediction

    Posted: 26 Sep 2020 09:47 PM PDT

Its pretty obvious that Clash Royale has seen better days. Clan wars 2 has left many unsatisfied, and even before that the game was slowly dying. So, what is next in stock for Clash Royale? My prediction.

First, I would lile to mention how most games grow/maintain an active playerbase. Here are the 2 ways that are the most often:

    1. People see it/stay active due to social media. When a big content creator covers something on a platform like youtube or twitch, then people rush to see it, if they enjoy it, they often stay. This quickly creates a playerbase, however often these players move to other atractions quickly, making the game for like a short trend, rather than a long lasting game. However, sometimes a game manages to maintain a playerbase, which produces its own talented content creators who stuck to that game, which then grows the game, and so on.

    2. The game is made by a well known publisher, which uses its brand to promote the game. This is often much more stable in terms of long term players. People often trust the brand, and are more willing to stick to it as they believe the game will get better if it is not at the moment. This game will often also attract big youtubers who are also fans of that brand, bringing in new players.

Clash Royale is a result of number 2. When it came out, Supercell was lready known as the creator of HayDay, and more notably, Clash of Clans. People trused supercell to deliver, and at first, deliver it did.

The first year or so the game was doing great. People enjoyed it, new players were coming in. More importantly, it had content creators and an active community.

Every game needs an active community, an actkve helps a game by often spreading the word, or making the game a reputation. A good fandom can help the popularity of a game greatly, while a toxic fandom can scare away new players. Same goes for youtubers. As long as youtubers with quality content and a good enough sub count are interested in making content of a game, the game will grow.

However, recently Clash Royale has been doing badly. And so have Clash Royale Youtubers. Clash With Ash has been on a decline of new subcribers and video views, so has Havoc Gaming. Surgical Goblin has started to migrate to fortnite, and NickatNyte has been uploading less and less Clash Royale content. Even on google trends, Clash Royale as a search is now 3rd behind both Brawl Stars and COC.

So, what will happen next? Well, Clash Royale youtubers will realize that they are on a sinking ship, and that its time to move. More and more will quit. There will be very little new players joining.

Meanwhile, the frustrated community will start to lose its patience. Coupled with their favorite Youtubers not uploading about Clash Royale, thry will leave. With no new players, and old players leaving, Clash Royale will die.

This can take 6 months, 8 months, or 12 months. But thats not the point, the point is:

If SuperCell does not act fast, there will be no Clash Royale.

I'm level 11 with cards lvl 9-11 in clan wars. Last 2 weeks I haven't won a single duel/1v1 battle. Why? Cause I keep getting matched with people 2-4 higher levels. Not once I've gotten matched against a player with fair and same levels as me. This is really unenjoyable.
