[Discussion] The actual problem with wizard

    Posted: 23 May 2021 03:19 PM PDT

Wizard is able to deal air and ground decent splash damage, which justifies it costing 5 elixir and having low health. But...

But spells (especially Fireball) do exactly the same thing. Fireball is 1 less elixir, and its damage output is often sufficient to kill or put down to very low health support troops (which then can be taken down by a small spell, or a single-target troop). And it has larger range and is not forced to hit at the center of a troop, so it can hit more troops. Sure, wizard can counterpush, but fireball can also chip the tower and get value if an opponent troop is played in the back. In fact, big spells' chip, although less efficient, has the serious advantage to be guaranteed, which allows to finish towers in overtime. This is why big spells are often recommended.

Look at "rate my deck" posts on this sub. Replacing wizard by fireball is almost always good advice (I shouldn't even say almost). Funniest is when someone replies to a deck "there's too much splash" and end up recommending a deck with the same number of splash cards, but with 1-2 of them being spells. I think midladder players use wizard and other splashers partly because they don't realise how spells do their job better.

This also somewhat applies to Executioner (although he can tank much more )and Witch (although she spawns skeletons so it's a bit different).

There's an outlier though, and it's Skeleton Dragons, that stay high in the win rates. They're 4 elixir and they deal air and ground splash, and die to Fireball. I think the reason why they work well is because they're aerial and thus work well in anti-air bait (lavaloon) decks. In such bait decks they're harder to kill and can counterpush or dual-lane push so they do fireball's job, but better. Some of the best skeleton dragons decks have no big spell.

Solutions : maybe add more cards like Earthquake, that work like big spells against towers but don't have the anti-air splash ability. EQ is strong with Hog Rider and is the cheapest high tower damage spell so it's mostly used in Cycle decks, which thus use the cheapest anti-air splasher, Firecracker. While EQ doesn't have anti-air, Lightning doesn't have splash. Lightning decks use ice wiz-nado-baby dragon. Lightning hits 3 times, so it's only inefficient when there's many smaller troops. So although it's used in beatdown decks they don't need the damage output of wizard, and baby dragon has much more hp. Maybe a single-target big spell can create a wizard meta deck. (But it may be quite toxic xbow wizard decks with the big spell getting rid of tanks put against the xbow and able to spell cycle if needed)

(Extreme, not 100% serious) What if spells are removed, with wizard and other splashers remaining to do their job ? Maybe in a separate gamemode, although some cards would probably be pretty OP (princess ?)

Tldr Fieball does wizard's job but better

How do you get past challenger 3?

    Posted: 23 May 2021 05:10 PM PDT

I just can't beat all the losers with level 12 mega knights.

I normally use classic log bait or 2.6 hog.

    Fireball vs poison ☣

    Posted: 23 May 2021 10:46 AM PDT

Fireball's use rate has sky rocketed recently due to many fireball bait troops and buildings in the meta right now but I believe it definitely does not mean that it needs nerf (nor buff).

When looking at the leaderboards today I couldn't help but notice the sheer size of fireball's usage rate. I repeatedly saw that Pekka bridge spam commonly had fireball rather than poison. It appears that poison is only still used in few meta decks such as splash yard.

Therefore a potential minor poison buff such as a slight movement speed slow down, not near as much as before, may bring it's use rates back up a little.

This would help to make fireball less dominant in classic poison archetype decks, also potentially reducing fireball's usage rate as poison becomes more of a substitute.

This is only a suggestion and I doubt it would be happen. May be there are better alternatives or do you think that nothing should be done?

Feel free to comment down your thoughts on fireball below. Thanks for your time.
