Daily Deck Discussion 5/18 - 5/21: The Legend of Lavaclone, and its effect in past meta

    Posted: 18 May 2020 03:31 AM PDT

How Lavaclone has affected the meta, and how the deck itself dropped out and lost popularity.

In Clash Royal's lifetime, there have been countless of popular archetypes and decks that have surfaced, and disappeared. This was the case, especially from a year ago, for Lavaclone. Lavaclone was known as one of the most powerful combos in the game at the time, the deck itself having several spell bait elements as well as being primarily beatdown. But overall, what started the Lavaclone meta? And what caused the deck to die down?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Clone's January 2019 rework:

One of the pinpoint arguments made for Lavaclone's rise, is through Clone's rework in January of 2019.
According to the ClashRoyaleFandom "...the January Update made the cloned troops spawn behind the original troops instead of to the right".
The reason behind this change was to make it easier for the non-cloned troops to make it to the tower, by pushing them closer towards the tower, and the cloned troops back, making it easier to connect with troops as Balloon, Giant Skeleton, and Skeleton Barrel.
This was also to help reduce the inconsistencies between Cloning troops to the right, and using different lanes.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    What is the Lavaclone deck?

The deck, in particular, is the following:

    Lavahound
    Clone
    Baby Dragon
    Lumberjack
    Skeleton Army
    Flying Machine
    Bats
    Snowball

Note: There are different variants of this deck, such as having Arrows for Snowball, or Guards for Skeleton Army. But they all revolve around baiting opponents spells and building a push behind Lavahound, and Cloning the beatdown, so the strategy in question stays relatively the same.

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Discussion questions:

    • What is your experience using, or fighting against Lavaclone
      • Do you hate the deck, or love the deck? Why?
      • What strategies did you use towards overcoming Lavaclone, or using it to its fullest potential?
    • What other decks and archetypes can relate to Lavaclone?
      • Does this deck fall under the bait archetype, or beatdown?
      • What other decks can you use in the exact way this deck can be used?
    • What other variants of this deck have you seen or used?
      • What cards did you switch out and why?

    -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Why do you think Lavaclone has lost popularity in the last year?

There can be several different reasons for this, the most popular theories are as following:

    • Due to several splash cards being reworked, added, or buffed (Examples can be Executioner, Magic Archer, and Firecracker)
    • Due to more spells being reworked, added, or buffed (Examples can be Arrows, Royal Delivery, and Tornado)
    • Due to Clone's range nerf in April of 2019 (Reduced from a 4 tile range, to 3 tiles)

Please leave what you think caused Lavaloons downfall in the poll below!

Side note: We decided to take a different approach to this Daily Discussion. Instead of talking about a specific card, its counters, and its strategies, we decided to give the spotlight to an entire deck and archetype in question. We think this will help narrow conversations down, as well as giving some light on players who use this deck (Giving tips on strategies, matchups, etc), and for those who have trouble fighting against this deck (What its primary weaknesses are, how to work around such synergies).
Please make sure to leave a comment about this kind of format, what you liked, what you disliked, what you would like to see added or changed, and if you would like to see more like this!

The trail of the miner can affect the amount of damage wildly! A lone skarmy will do 2,010 but when interrupted by the miners trail it can do between 1,206 and 2,345.

[Effort post] What Has Happened to this Game?

    Posted: 18 May 2020 05:27 PM PDT

Clash Royale is on a down swing. A massive downswing. Active players are the lowest they've been since release, high-end Youtubers are becoming disgruntled and this community is reaching levels of toxicity I wasn't sure was possible.

The game is in a slump. Let's break down why, starting with updates over the past year:

    1. November 2019. Card interface rework along with some new art. Minor QoL changes.
    2. September 2019. Party button interface along with some new art. Minor QoL changes. Triple draft.
    3. July 2019. Pass Royale. Redistribution of daily rewards (crown chests) appended to a new interface. Monetisation. New season artwork. Minor QoL changes.
    4. April 2019. Redistribution of ladder rewards appended to a new interface. Mega deck, elixir capture, dragon hunt.

There's a worrying trend here. Other than the handful of new game-modes (albeit some are just versions of ones that already exist), last year all we got was interface reworks hyped up to be massive additions to the game, when in reality nothing really changed. Not a strong precedent for a game that requires consistent tweaks to keep it fresh…

Keeping on the topic of tweaks, let's briefly go over balance changes. I think Seth does… a job. I'm pretty neutral with my thoughts on his ability to balance, and I get the serious challenge he has with balancing so many cards. However, I have two main issues with the way he approaches balances: Simplicity and lack of testing. Seth has this grand picture where every card is streamlined in a way to, well I assume, make interactions easier to understand. The main problem with this is the fact the game is so diverse - there are some cards which require a lot of thought in balancing, and a simple '0.1 second initial hit delay' is just not good enough in some cases. It also leads to lacklustre changes which have niche, weird interaction changes which baffle the community. The most recent one I can think of is the range change to the Mini Pekka, which has created all sorts of weird interactions with fast units and distancing. Then we come to lack of testing, where cards are emergency nerfed/buffed right before balances, or reworked entirely and just become either ridiculously broken or useless (Witch, Executioner, Tornado etc.). The issue here is only one person controls these changes, and whilst they probably get verified by the team, a single person dealing with the changes can lead to tunnel vision. We've had several cards buffed/nerfed that have been left for 2 seasons simply because Seth doesn't want to revert his mistake (luckily the Magic Archer did not follow this trend recently), which is not healthy for the game.

Communication is also… dire. Don't get me wrong, TV Royale etc are decent at summarising season balances etc but outside of that we don't hear anything. A few months back we got a 'what we're working on!' thread and it was just a vague mess. Certain statements are made on different platforms and have to be cross-posted by players, rather than posted on all platforms under an official name. It sucks, and I would love more communication from the devs with the player base, either in the form of more AMAs/QAs or just every now and then throwing a question to us: 'What do you think about this potential change?', 'we're considering adding something along these lines, thoughts?'. I get that the community is toxic, but I think some of that toxicity is driven by the lack of proper communication.

I want to see this game thrive, but right now it's just... stale. The update in June has to be the biggest one they've ever dropped. Clan wars rework? If it's just that, it's not enough. This game needs some new huge additions, and honestly I don't think a rework would cut it. Guess we'll find out whenever we actually get the update.

TL;DR: Only had interface/artwork updates over the last 13 months, balance changes are approached weirdly, communication is a shambles and if the next update isn't more than just a Clan War rework then I fear the worst.

This game is the definition of the word "coasting" right now.

So I've played since soft launch. I've stuck with this game for a bit over 4 years and only quit once (Freeze meta if early 2019 broke my joy in the game) and I've defended this game despite almost everyone I know dropping it but me. But I've honestly run out of stuff to defend. We are going on 9 months with no updates to this game and 11 months since the last big update. Supercell has tried pretending like these stale ass monthly seasons are amazing mini-updates when they sadly are not. Same stuff each month, new tower skin, new "exclusive" emote, 1-2 emotes in challenges and 1-2 emotes in overpriced store packs. Not to mention the same game modes repackaged to fit the monthly season's theme. On top of that we have Clan Wars the most boring "wait to play 1 match" system ever introduced. I've lost pretty much any hope I had left in this game. Hard to believe I'm starting to agree with everyone that calls it a dead game.

If anyone needs a deck I recommend trying this one out, I was able to snatch 15 wins with it, and it has proven even better in ladder. 80-90% win rate

    Speed-up Tokens

    Posted: 18 May 2020 03:03 PM PDT

Has anybody ever gone up an arena and not been ready? Like you're playing a game during your lunch break and you win a game that pulls you up an arena. Let's say you only have 3 Silver chests and 1 Gold chest, and now it takes half the time to unlock them when you're at work, so you can't realistically refill your chests and take advantage of the speed-up boost.

My idea is to make a Speed-up Token that you receive in a new arena, and you can activate it whenever you want for 24 hours. To prevent hoarding, SC could limit you to 3 at a time, so if you climb up more than 3 arenas without using them, you forfeit the new tokens.

Personally, I don't like the Speed-up boosts - it stresses me out knowing that I don't have any chests, so a token would allow me to use it on the weekend when I have more time to play, or when I get a Legendary chest (or any other chest that takes 12 hours).

I feel like the cost of epics from the shop, and every other card should be changed. Look at the balloon and witch, 250 Gems is in no way equivalent to 5000 gold. You could buy a new emote, or 5 cards? Not worth it
