[EFFORT] Effectively Using and Countering the Princess

    Posted: 08 Nov 2019 02:09 PM PST

(NOTE- All interactions in this guide will be assuming the game is being played at tournament standard unless otherwise specified)

The Princess is one of the most versatile cards in the entire game for just 3 Elixir. Her massive range and huge splash radius compliment each other so well on defense as well as offense. In this guide I'll go over her general stats, the best ways to use her, and share the best ways to counter her.

    GENERAL INFORMATION

    Arena Unlocked- Royal Arena

    Rarity- Legendary

    Elixir Cost- 3

    Hit Speed- 3 seconds

    Move Speed- Medium

Targets both Air and Ground units

    Range- 9 tiles

    HP- 216

    Area Damage- 140

    Damage Per Second- 46

    HOW TO USE

The Princess, having one of the longest ranges in the game, only being beaten out by X-Bow and Mortar, has both great offensive and defensive capabilities with it. Where as with splashers like Wizard and Ice Wizard, they'll have to get their hands dirty and stand right in front of the swarm for their splash to be the most effective, that isn't the case with her. With a 9 tile range, the Princess doesn't have to take any damage at all, as she can safely snipe from across the Arena, and she will wipe out all the Goblins and Minions your opponent could throw at her. Her flaming arrows will one shot Spear Goblins, Skeletons, Fire Spirits, and Bats, and will leave Stab Goblins and Minions with just a sliver of health. When defending these swarms, you are going to want to place her on the side with the higher health tower, as to minimize the value gained from your opponent throwing down that Fireball or Poison. It's a risky play, but if you know that they are low on elixir, you can play the Princess closer to the river so your opponent can't hit the tower if they decide to throw spells at her. As for answering win conditions, she's not all that great. She just doesn't have the damage or hit speed to efficiently take any of them out, so don't play that Princess to answer that Hog Rider or Balloon, rather save your elixir for a better option. Although due to her massive range, she can help fend off a Graveyard from the other side with her huge splash. But again, have something else helping, as she just can't attack fast enough. The Princess in general is an excellent support for your defense. She cannot take on a Giant Witch or Golem Night Witch combo by herself; that is true. But say you have an Inferno Tower placed down for the tank. The Witches Skeletons and Bats are distracting it. Again, play the Princess on the other side, preferably away from the tower, and she will clean up those swarms and also damage the Witches and tank in the process, allowing the Inferno Tower to wreck that tank, and as a bonus, the Princess will also help finish off the Witches. Like most splashers, she's a great counter to spawner decks. She'll one shot those Skeletons, Spear Goblins, and Fire Spirits, and deal pretty decent chip damage to the Barbarians and take them out with the towers help. A miscellaneous interaction is her being able to completely stop a Skeleton Barrel, even from the other side of the Arena. Her arrows melt the Skeletons as soon as they drop from the Barrel.

She is very irritating to deal with when she is used on offense. If your opponent is low on their elixir, you can quick drop her at the bridge and chip them away. While it is true that a lot of her counters are rather cheap, your opponent will be forced to play them right when they get that amount of elixir, putting them back to zero and giving you an even bigger elixir lead. This is also great because your opponent may quickly use their cheap spell like their Log on her. Now that their spell is baited, you have free reign to use your other cards weak to Log while your opponent is still down on Elixir. Dropping her at the bridge is also viable as a first play as your opponent most likely won't except an aggressive play like that. While she herself can't take on win conditions that well, she is very good at supporting them, the two best examples being Hog and Giant. Both of these cards are weak to swarms, and with the Princess's huge splash, she will enable them to go to town on that Princess Tower. However, do not place her right at the bridge with your win condition. This is because she will end up locking onto the tower, and while she may splash onto that defending troop, the troop will eventually come towards the bridge and take her out. Instead, place her slightly off to the left or right, depending on what side you are attacking, so she ends up prioritizing the defending swarm or other small troop over the tower and will take out the troops before locking onto the tower.

As for synergies, she works well with small spells. If you pair her with Snowball or Zap, those pesky Minions and Goblins will be stunned or slowed down and taken out. With Barb Barrel, she is able to take on a lot of cards like Wizard, Witch, and Musketeer and stay alive because the Barbarian will have soaked up the damage from those troops. Similar to other splashers like Baby Dragon or Executioner, she has a synergy with Tornado, pulling everything together for her to burn down with her flaming arrows. Another application is to get a quick and easy King activation with the Miner, as he is definitely a solid counter to her. Speaking of....

    HOW TO COUNTER

The Princess, having relatively low health, can be taken out by a lot of spells and troops alike. Let's go over hard counters first

The Log- Will kill her fully in tournament standard modes like GC's, but will not be able to kill her if underleveled. While The Log does kill her, it is not wise to do this, as that is exactly what the Princess player wants you to do, so they can go in with their Goblin Barrel or whatever they have

Arrows- Same deal as Log, just one elixir more. Will kill her unless underleveled, but is a terrible idea to do so unless they are far from their Barrel or down on Elixir.

Fireball/Poison- These two will fully counter her, albeit for 2 more Elixir then Log and 1 more then Arrows. This is definitely a safer play however, because if played in the back, you have the potential to hit the tower and kill her, and you'll still have your small spell for their Barrel.

Rocket/Lightning- Look....I really wouldn't recommend doing this. Even though you get Tower damage, your now down 3 elixir. It's not worth it in my opinion. But if there's something else like a Musketeer or Wizard or anything that dies to those spells, I'd say it's worth it.

The Princess's two hard counters that will net you a positive elixir lead are both spells you want to save for their Barrel, so what else can you use? These cards will counter her, but aren't guaranteed to work all the time like the hard counters will.

Skeletons/Fire Spirits/Bats/Spear Goblins- Skeletons can counter her for two less elixir, Bats, Fire Spirits and Spear Goblins can do it for one less elixir. Problem? All of these cards are very unrealible to counter her. If you place them too early, the Princess herself will just melt them, and even if you wait until she locks on, the Princess player could just Zap or Log them, and you'll have to use something else.

Goblins/Goblin Gang- A bit better then the units listed above, as for the most part, they won't die to Zap, but still not great, as they will still die to The Log. But if you've baited their Log, then you can absolutely go in for Goblins or the Gang to take her out and potentially even go in for a counterattack.

Miner- Because you can send him anywhere in the Arena, he can take her out no matter where she is, whether she's in the back or at the bridge . However if your going to do this, always assume that she will have support backing her up. If they surround her with Goblin Gang to take out your Miner, you can prediction Poison them on the next rotation, or do the classic trick of sending the Miner to the tower so that when the opponent tries to protect her with the Gang, they both die and you get Miner chip damage on the tower to boot. If they block with something like a Knight, then it will just be a matter of predicting where they will drop the Knight so the Miner can kill the Princess before he himself is reduced to nothing but a puddle of Elixir.

Dart Goblin- He has enough health to survive one shot from the Princess, and his quick attack speed will take her down in no time. Again, just be wary of prediction Log or Arrows

Tornado- Yeah, if this is your only card that can counter her in your hand, just cast it so the edge of the Tornado is touching her. This will pull her in range of the tower. But if you do this, then you're going to have a hard time defending against the Goblin Barrel if you don't have a small spell or if it isn't in rotation, as the Tornado can almost always activate the King tower against the Goblin Barrel and can deny all damage from it afterwards

Barbarian Barrel- Ever since the August Balance Changes, the barrels damage alone cannot kill the Princess. It is true that the Barbarian can finish her off, but a good Princess player will protect her, rendering that 2 elixir wasted. If you want to minimize the chances of the Barbarian being blocked, place it so the Barrel will damage her as it's about to pop so the Barbarian lands right on her and can get the finishing blow quickly.

Minions- Will survive Zap, and can't be Logged, so it usually is a pretty solid option to counter her, but if that Princess is backed up with another splasher or Arrows, then that's 3 elixir down the drain.

Other methods of countering her which I didn't think needed their own section includes Knight, Musketeer, Archers, and Bomber. Knight will two shot her, but perhaps back him up with a high DPS unit so if they support the Princess with say, a Knight of their own, your Knight will win. Bomber, Musketeer, and Archers all have the range to take her out. Each Archer will need two shots, Musketeer needs two as well, and Bomber only needs one throw to get the job done. The Princess herself also works, but if you want your Princess to continue attacking and make your opponent spend more elixir to defend her, just slap down something cheap like an Ice Spirit if the enemy Princess is at the bridge, or a Zap if she is near the river. This way, your Princess only needs to take one shot.

I really do appreciate the comments I've been getting on my other strategy guides. I had the outlines for the Executioner and Valkyrie guides done so I had just needed to fill them in where I needed to, and I've been working on this guide since yesterday. Again, let me know of any mistakes. Next up is the Hunter Guide! I'll have it up by Sunday or Monday.
